Rockets press release:

Four current Kelowna Rockets players will attend National Hockey League rookie camps/tournaments later this week.

Netminder Talyn Boyko(New York Rangers) and forward Colton Dach  (Chicago Blackhawks) skipped the Rockets camp reporting directly to their respective teams.

Goaltender Jari Kykkanen  (Florida Panthers) and defencemen Noah Dorey (Edmonton) will depart Kelowna to join NHL clubs that invited them as undrafted players.

Boyko was selected in the fourth round (No. 112) in the 2021 NHL Draft. The Drumheller, AB product became the seventh Rockets goaltender to be named the Rockets MVP for the season. He is currently unsigned by New York.

In his first season with the Rockets, Dach led the Kelowna in points (79), assists (50) and shared the team lead in goals (29) through 61 games during the regular season. He signed a three-year entry-level contract with Chicago after they selected him in the second round (No. 62) in the 2021 NHL Draft.

Dorey attended Edmonton’s development camp this past July after going undrafted in the 2022 NHL Draft. Last year he was invited to the Boston Bruins development camp last fall after going undrafted in the 2021 NHL Draft.

Kykkanen also attended the Panthers development camp this past summer after going undrafted.

Regan’s Take:

Of the four, don’t be surprised if Colton Dach is given the chance by playing in a few NHL pre-season games. The Blackhawks were the 6th worst team in the NHL last season with only 28 wins. They are in total rebuild mode, which means players like Dach will get a solid look.

Talyn Boyko is trying to earn an NHL contract. He really needs to impress at camp and my gut tells me he will return to Kelowna this season. The Rangers just don’t have any room for him in the minor league system. If Boyko returns, he will join Adam Kydd and Jake Poole as overage players.

Noah Dorey is an interesting story. NHL teams like him, yet they won’t go as far as to draft him. It will be fun to watch him play for the Oilers at the Young Stars Classic at the South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton from Friday, September 16 to Monday, September 19.

If I was any NHL team, I’d bring Jari Kykkanen to camp too. Considered a bit of a project, there is a lot of untapped potential there. If he can even rub shoulders with Panthers veteran goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, the flight down to sunny Florida will be well worth it.
