Caden Price is no ordinary 18-year-old

Determined defender is getting better by the day

Caden Price isn’t an attention-getter.

The 18-year-old, who turns 19 in late August, won’t star in the next Kelowna Rockets TikTok video. Mild-mannered, the understated defender isn’t among the loudest in the dressing room either.

The slick-skating Saskatchewan-born boy does his talking on the ice. Damon Severson and Kaedan Korczak were eerily similar, and both ‘stubble-jumpers’ are playing in the NHL with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Las Vegas Golden Knights respectively.

Price is having a career year with 49 points, which is good for fourth in team scoring. That is saying something for a squad that boasts Andrew Cristall, Tij Iginla, and Gabriel Szturc – all forwards.

“I am pretty confident in my abilities, and I think at this time of the year our team is confident as a group,” he said. “If we all stick to the plan, we are tough to beat.”

What might be overlooked in Price’s terrific play this season is those 49 points have come in just 54 regular season games. At almost a point a game, and six goals and three assists better than in his draft year, the third-round selection of the Seattle Kraken is evolving into a terrific junior player. In fact, his point totals are better than Tri-City Americans defenseman Lukas Dragicevic, who was chosen in the second round by the third year NHL franchise.

“Every game I am getting a little more confident,” he told RocketFAN. “I am using my strength, which is my skating to my advantage and just keep moving my feet.”

Sitting eighth in league scoring among defensemen, Price logs the most minutes of any defender on the Rockets roster, playing a regular shift, seeing power play time, and being used when the game is on the line for his ability to make good decisions with the puck.

You could argue, Price took a step forward in his evolution as a point producer in the final game of December. Since picking up an assist in a home-ice win over the Calgary Hitmen back on December 30th, the Saskatoon resident has 7+19=26 in 26 games.

It shouldn’t come as a coincidence with the evolution of Price’s play at both ends of the ice, a greater commitment to defending among the group, and goaltending Jari Kykkanen turning his game up a notch, the Rockets have points in five straight games (4-0-1-0).

“We are making strides in the right direction,” Price added about his team giving the Vancouver Giants a scare, while not settling for seventh place in the Western Conference by sitting two points off the pace.

“We are playing the right way here; we are playing as a team. Our forecheck has been unbelievable lately, maybe the best I’ve seen. Guys are hard on the puck and hitting. Our second guy is getting on pucks quickly. That is the key for us to have o-zone pressure and play down at that end of the ice.

“Things are clicking and it’s good to see.”
