Boyko’s future bright in Rangers crease

Everybody needs a helping hand.

Someone to lean on in times of struggle, or a strong inner circle that can celebrate the small victories in life.

Athletes, too, need a strong support system to get them to the next level.

Kelowna Rockets goalie Talyn Boyko can rely on family, sure, but he has another valuable resource that can play a part in his evolution as an elite netminder.

New York Rangers Goaltending Consultant Jean-Ian Filiatrault was on the ice this week at Prospera Place working with the 20-year-old goalie, fine tuning his game.

Boyko appreciates the interest and knowledge the 45-year-old brings to the ice.

“It’s always really beneficial to have him come out”, Boyko told RocketFAN. “He’s a super smart goalie mind and has been around some outstanding goalies and learned from some of the best goalie coaches in the world. He’s super detail oriented and it’s great to get his perspective along with Eli and Liam.”

Rockets goaltending coach Eli Wilson and Liam McOnie work with Boyko extensively during the season, where as Filiatrault travels from city-to-city across North America where he can see face-to-face, all of the NHL team’s top players.

“It’s also nice to have some insight from New York and what’s going on there, as well as what they think I’ve been improving on and what they want me to continue to focus on developing”, Boyko added.

Originally drafted by the Rangers in the fourth round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, the Drumheller, Alberta product eventually signed a pro contact three weeks ago before being sent back to the WHL.

Filiatrault is no stranger to the position. A goaltender himself, he spent time coaching in Toronto, Anaheim and Colorado before joining the Rangers working with drafted puck stoppers.

“He likes to focus on just a couple of select areas at a time”, Boyko continued. “Rather than trying to improve a significant number of things at once, we like to pick one or two things and spend the majority of the year focusing on them.”

Not wanting to upset the apple cart, Filiatrault’s visits are intended to build up the prospect, not tear them down.

“He comes in and we check up on certain areas whether that’s through practice or video. Throughout the season he’s always available for any questions or advice I might ask for.”

A valuable listening ear indeed.

Note: While Filiatrault spoke to RocketFAN, and was very accommodating, he did not feel comfortable going on record for this article.
