17-year-old eyeing 100 career points

Cristall about to join elite company

Recording 100 career points in the Western Hockey League is a terrific accomplishment.

Hitting the milestone in a quick fashion is even more impressive.

Kelowna Rockets forward Andrew Cristall is closing in on some prestigious company as one of the quickest players to reach the mark.

The 17-year-old enters tonight’s home game against the visiting Prince George’s Cougars with 96 points in 88 career games.

The slick skating forward won’t break the franchise record set by Jamie Benn, who as a 19-year-old, hit the 100-point plateau in just 73 games.

Benn is now the captain of the Dallas Stars, with the 33-year-old just 40 games shy of 1,000 for his NHL career.

If Cristall can hit the benchmark tonight against the Cougars, or more realistically Saturday in Kamloops, he will become the second-quickest Kelowna Rockets player to hit the 100-point mark.

Nick Merkley earned 100 points in 91 career games. Shane McColgan had 100 points in 103 games while Dillon Dube, who is now playing in the NHL with the Calgary Flames, hit the 100-point mark in 117 games.

While unable to break Benn’s record, being two years younger is eye-popping.

Selected in the first round of the 2020 WHL Prospects Draft, only seven players were chosen before the Rockets plucked the Burnaby-born boy off the board.

Of the seven before him, only Connor Bedard of the Regina Pats, chosen first overall in that draft class, and will undoubtedly be selected with the first overall pick in June’s NHL Entry Draft in Nashville, Tennessee, accomplished the feat quicker, earning 100 points in just 56 astonishing games.

Since coming on the scene two years ago, Cristall has had 29 multiple-point games, with a career-high five points (2+3=5) against the Vancouver Giants last March.

What will amaze many is the likable forward has never scored three goals in one game. He has been able to score two goals – 12 times.

It is worth heading out to Prospera Place tonight to watch the Kelowna Rockets host the Prince George Cougars.

Four players, two with each team, could have their names called in the opening round of the NHL Draft.

Cristall and teammate Caden Price face-off against Cougars forwards Riley Heidt and Koehn Ziemmer.

Heidt was rated an ‘A’ prospect by NHL Central Scouting on its Preliminary Players to Watch list, while Cristall, Price and Ziemmer were ranked as ‘B’ prospects.
