Rockets drop 9th game of season

Solid effort in Seattle setback

It was another game where the opposition, on paper, looked superior yet the Kelowna Rockets wouldn’t cower.

It took a Reid Schaefer goal, a first-round NHL draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers, with less than two minutes remaining in the third period for the Seattle Thunderbirds to breathe easy in a 4-2 home-ice win.

The odds were stacked against the visitors heading into the game, facing a team with just one regulation loss in their opening eight home games, and with three first-round NHL draft picks, including Nolan Allan and Kevin Korchinski, both chosen by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2021 and 2022 respectively, patrolling the T-Birds blueline.

With Rockets’ captain Colton Dach, a second-round draft pick of the Blackhawks in his own right, serving a one-game suspension for a check to the head major and game misconduct against Tri-City Saturday night, extra effort was required from several players to pull off the upset.

The effort was there. The results weren’t.

Despite giving up the opening goal just 1:01 into the game, the early adversity had the road team scoring the tying goal just one minute and 50 seconds later.

Adam Kydd, who was conspicuously absent in the third period after blocking a shot, converted his 11th goal of the season and it was a new game.

As hard as the Rockets tried, they could never find the lead goal.

When Jackson DeSouza scored his third goal in two games to tie things at two, the T-Birds were able to find the lead goal just one minute and 50 seconds later.

In a game this tight, the margin for error was small. Awarded a five-on-three power play late in the second period for only 40 seconds, the Rockets, playing their 8th road game of the season and owning the fifth best efficiency rate with the extra man, couldn’t find the equalizing goal, nor could they knot it up with an early 5 on 4 chance in the third period.

The Rockets would end the night going 0 for 3 with the extra man.

The T-Birds when leading after 40 minutes are now a perfect 11-0-0-0.

Max Graham was one of the Rockets player’s who did some heavy lifting. The 18-year-old not only led the team in shots on goal with five, but he also got into a third period scrap with T-Birds d-man Jeremy Hanzal in an effort to defend Andrew Cristall, who was given a rough ride by the veteran defender.

A tell-tale sign of exactly how well the Rockets played was on the shot clock, where starter Talyn Boyko faced only 24 pucks directed his way.

In an arena where the shot totals are often elevated, keeping the T-Birds to that low of a count was an impressive feat in itself.

If we see a similar effort Friday in Everett against the Silvertips, with Dach back in the lineup to provide leadership and a scoring threat, look for favorable results.
