Can't find that winning feeling at home

A new low

Was Sunday’s 5-1 loss to the visiting Victoria Royals the worst home-ice setback of the season for the Kelowna Rockets?

If not, it was darn close.

Outplayed for 75 percent of the game, the Royals looked fresher, and hungrier in the lopsided win.

They shouldn’t have been, considering it was their fourth game in five nights, with stops in four different cities, two different countries, and two American states (Oregon/Washington).

The Royals played with more poise with the puck and looked anything but flat after losing the previous night to the last-place Spokane Chiefs (6-3).

The aggressor in all areas of the game, the Royals built up a 3-0 first-period lead, extending it to 5-0 after 40 minutes and cruised to only their 13th victory of the season.

Of those 13 wins, 46 percent of them have come against the Rockets this season, including six consecutive games to get back in the playoff hunt in the Western Conference after dropping the opening two games of the seasonal series.

The last win for the Rockets against their BC Division rivals was a 2-1 overtime victory back in early October.

Left for dead with a horrendous start to the season with three regulation wins in its opening 27 games, the Royals are now tied with the Rockets for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, with both teams earning 31 points.

Losers of nine of their last 10 home games and with just five wins in their last 23 games, the Rockets have won only six times in 20 attempts in front of the home town crowd.

D-man Jackson DeSouza spoiled Royals goaltender Braden Holt’s shutout bid, with his 5th goal of the season and first goal in 19 games with 3:06 left on the clock to make it a 5-1 final.

It avoided a shutout for the third time this season on home ice, after losing by scores of 3-0 to both the Brandon Wheat Kings and Prince George Cougars.

The last time the Royals came into Kelowna and earned a shutout win was January 8, 2020 when Shane Farkas made 29 saves in a 1-0 victory.

The 14 shots directed at the Royal net, tied the season low set in a 4-1 setback to the Medicine Hat Tigers prior to the Christmas break.

Playing his final game in his junior career at Prospera Place, Royals forward Jake Poole scored his best 25th goal of the season and ended the campaign with 4 goals and 12 points in the seasonal series against his old team, which traded him away to the Royals on October 4th for a 8th round WHL Prospect pick.

With a  mark of 14-25-3-0, the Rockets record after 42 games is only a pipe dream from the 26-12-1-3 mark the team set a season ago, with 12 fewer wins and 13 more losses.

With the team floundering in the standings, fans are asking about the health status of leading scorer Andrew Cristall, who missed all three games on the weekend, and six consecutive with an undisclosed injury.

With the 17-year-old still hurt, it has led to speculation he won’t be participating in the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Vancouver on Wednesday.

Stay tuned!
