Webster’s wish granted

This article was written on September 15th, 2022, and received an amazing number of reads. The fans clearly love human interest.  Tim Webster’s story was the 7th most popular since this platform was launched last fall.

It is a dream come true for Tim Webster.

The nineteen-year-old is the new equipment manager of the Kelowna Rockets.

Born in Winfield, Webster grew up watching the team when his dad would take him to home games. He would eventually become a dressing room attendant, spending five years helping the training staff do odd jobs around the arena.

“I knew the first day that I came in here, my first training camp when I was 11 years old, the respect that the players gave then equipment manager Brendan Hait. I wanted that, and I knew from that day that this is what I wanted to do”, Webster told RocketFAN.

Webster says he has been to every home game since the start of the 2007-08 season, allowing him to witness some great moments.

“I was there when Tyson Barrie scored the overtime goal to win the WHL championship. I was on the ice when we won in 2015, so I’ve been a die-hard fan since I can remember.”

Webster is the youngest staff member on the team. It’s an interesting dynamic when dealing with players of a similar age.

“It is totally weird”, Webster added. “These guys could be my buddies. I think one of the problems you can run into is, do you treat these guys like your buddies or do you treat them like your co-workers? It is a fine line to walk. I think the guys have enough respect for me that my age doesn’t matter.”

Webster may be the hardest worker on the team. Whether it be on the road or at home, the responsibilities are endless. He is often first to the arena and last to leave.

“I always say they don’t list anything in my job description because it’s everything,” Webster chuckled. “Sharpening skates. Doing a bit of sowing as well as managing and ordering equipment. Keeping an inventory. Honestly, it is a lot more office work then I first thought.”

Webster’s greatest fear could be forgetting the team’s jerseys while on the road. It happened during the pre-season in 2019, not under Webster’s watch mind you, but when the training staff mistakenly left them back at Prospera Place. In pure desperation, they sported Vancouver Giants uniforms in a pre-season game against the the Everett Silvertips.

Webster has the privilege of working alongside long time athletic therapist Scott Hoyer, something he doesn’t take for granted.

“Scott (Hoyer) has been my mentor for as long as I can remember. To work with him full time is awesome. I wouldn’t want anyone else to share a seat with on the bus.”

Webster also credits former equipment manager Chaydyn Johnson for taking him under his wing and allowing him to sharpen skates. “He trusted me when he really had no reason too.”

He also wanted to point out the kindness shown by former players Carter Rigby, Mitch Wheaton, Tyson Baillie and Kyle Topping, calling them ‘consummate professionals’ who made him want to come to the rink everyday.

“Kris Mallette is always preaching about respect. Bruce (Hamilton) is also about respect. In my opinion, that is the right way to run a hockey team”, Webster concluded.
