Getting hot at the right time

On a weekend when clutch hockey was required, the Kelowna Rockets complied.

Needing two wins to solidify fifth place in the Western Conference, the team that improved significantly when the games counted the most, was able to beat the Vancouver Giants on consecutive nights.

After a 6-2 win in Langley Friday, a night later in front of a large crowd of over 57 hundred fans, the Rockets capped off the regular season with a 5-2 home-ice win.

“We got a little sloppy, but Jari [Kykkanen] cleaned it up and we came out with the win,” assistant coach Josh MacNevin told RocketFAN. “We are finding that groove, that winning formula.”

Unlike Friday where Andrew Cristall and Gabriel Szturc were key in a four-goal win, third-liner Ethan Neutens had two goals in the finale.

“He has great tools,” MacNevin added. “Great shot. Skates really well. Big kid. It was good to see him rewarded for working hard. That first goal was a really good effort from his entire line. The second one was just textbook. Get it [the puck] in, get a bump, get a shot on net, and get the rebound.”

Max Graham, named the player of the month for March before the game, added two-third period goals in the teams 33rd win of the season.

“That is a good hockey club,” MacNevin said about the Giants, who have the inevitable task of facing the Everett Silvertips in round one of the playoffs. “We were up 2-0 and we let our foot off the gas. They came back on us, which isn’t great before playoffs, but we are on to Wenatchee.”

MacNevin admitted the crowd, the second largest of the season, played a huge factor in getting his team over the top.

“It is amazing,” he said. “It keeps that momentum going. They were really rowdy and loud tonight, and it was great to see. It is like a sixth or seventh player on the ice. We need it.”

The Rockets will now face fourth-seed Wenatchee in the playoffs this Friday. During the regular season, the two teams split four games, with the home team winning every time.

“We are trending in the right direction,” MacNevin said when asked if his team is playoff-ready. “We are a different club. We haven’t played them in a while. We have to prepare this week. They are a good team.

“We have to do what we do and do it really well.”

How good were the Rockets down the stretch when wins were paramount? The team had 9 wins, two losses, one overtime loss, and one shootout loss in their final 13 games.

“We are so close to the mirror, so it is really hard to do,” MacNevin added about appreciating the team’s efforts over the last few weeks.

“We are well aware of the accomplishment of the struggles we had, and the valleys on how low they were and where we are now,” MacNevin added. “We have learned some lessons. We learned the hard way, so we continue to grow and can’t forget where we came from.

“We are on to Wenatchee and we are ready to rock.”
