More than a roster: The decisions shaping the Kelowna Rockets
Some of the hardest decisions in junior hockey are made away from the rink. They happen when a player who has given everything to a team is told his time with the organization is over.
For Derrick Martin, the Kelowna Rockets head coach, the challenge is making those decisions while keeping a dressing room together and preparing the players who remain for what comes next.
The Rockets have already faced that reality twice this season, parting ways with 20-year-old Connor Pankratz on September 15 and goaltender Josh Banini last week.
With the Western Hockey League limiting teams to three overage players, difficult choices are inevitable. But the circumstances surrounding Banini made the decision particularly tough. He was part of the group that hosted the 2026 Memorial Cup and started two games at the national championship.
